Slum to School

In the heart of a bustling Makoko, a vibrant community built on stilts above the Lagos Lagoon, lived an 8-year-old boy named Jameel. He was a remarkable child, known throughout the neighborhood for his innate intelligence and boundless curiosity. From an early age, it was clear that Jameel possessed a rare gift—a mind that sparkled with the potential for greatness. Everyone in his family used to playfully say that he would be the new Einstein someday. Jameel was the first of four children born to a struggling family in Makoko. His mother eked out a living by selling vegetables at the bustling Makoko market, while his father, a dedicated fisherman, toiled tirelessly to provide for his family.

Jameel’s most fervent desire was both simple and profound—he just wanted to go to school. When his father died due to an untreated diabetes, things worsened entirely for Jameel’s mother. First, she lost their house and had to keep Jameel with a local alfa, while she hanged 2 of his younger siblings into the homes of 2 different unwilling helpers. The last child stayed with her as she moves from place to place working in the neighbourhood.

Every morning, Jameel would watch with teary eyes as the neighborhood children, dressed in uniforms and carrying backpacks, joyfully made their way to the school. For Jameel, the school represented not just a place of learning but a gateway to a world of boundless possibilities. He yearned to sit in a classroom, to grasp a pencil in his small hand, and to inscribe his name on a pristine sheet of paper. He harbored wishes of his own.

However, the stark reality was that Jameel’s family was locked in a daily battle for survival.

Jameel’s story, his siblings, and many others like him altogether spark up the “School a Child” project. This compassionate initiative, build on the transformative power of education, aimed to provide access to educational opportunities for children like him.
